Aoyama Senichi (青山 仙一) is one of the main characters from season two, introduced in chapter 1. He is best friends with Akashi Yasuto, the protagonist of Season two.
He was listed as a survivor of Cube #41 in the original season, alongside Higashihama Tasuku and Kokado Hayato.
Personality[]
Aoyama is courageous, determined, caring, and extremely dependable. He later suffers severe PTSD from participating in the games, causing his personality to change almost completely, and for his memories to be lost.
Backstory[]
Aoyama Senichi met Akashi while they were just children, when he became a new student at the same elementary school as Akashi. Akashi introduces Aoyama to soccer and the two continue to play it together throughout their school years and stay close friends. Aoyama misses an important shot during a soccer game with Akashi, where Akashi was to scared to take the shot himself, instead feigning injury. This damaged their friendship slightly, Aoyama and Akashi quickly realize they should apologize to each other. They are unable to do this because Akashi leaves the school out of frustration and while at an arcade, the games begin at the school.
Plot[]
Aoyama is introduced alongside Akashi and their friend Wakabayashi. They are discussing soccer and dirty magazines when Aoyama and Akashi get into a slight altercation over a missed shot during a soccer game they played together. Akashi leaves the school frustrated, and soon the Daruma ga Koronda game begins. Aoyama is shown to be extremely dependable and quickly figures out how to play the game, succeeding in saving most of his classmates with a kick of Akashi's soccer ball he had left behind. Unfortunately he learns within seconds that he is the only winner, as all of his classmates die around him.
He is briefly shown participating and succeeding in the Maneki-neko game along with two other students. As he is being carried off to the hospital on a stretcher, Akashi catches up to him, shocked at his friends condition. Akashi barely manages to mutter "Let's play soccer together Akashi." before he is carried away.
Later on, when Akashi comes back home to search for his "Personal Item" he finds out from a group of kids that Aoyama is still alive. He contacts his dad and finds Aoyama in the hospital, but Aoyama no longer has any memories and suffers from a severe case of PTSD, due to his experiences in the games.
Aoyama is mentioned again in the Sky-High Hopscotch game, by Tasuku who survived in the same cube as Aoyama, much to Akashi's surprise.
Aoyama shows up as soon as the "Portrait of Hell" challenge starts, as he was already participating in the Sports Day games. He defeats a monster just in time to save Akashi, and states Akashis name, but besides that he has changed completely again. According to someone else who survived the cube with him, Aoyama has become an emotionless warrior now, thinking only of surviving. He runs up the stairs to heaven, choosing the darkness path, with Akashi and co following after.
He continues to take keys with brutal force from participants, but while participating in the Buddha Spider Room with Akashi, Akashi finally gets through to him and he snaps back to his old self, completing the room alive with Akashi and Sanada.
Aoyama makes it to the door of escape with Akashi, Shimura and Tenma. He and Akashi both apologize to eachother, and begin placing the keys into the Tanuuki, realizing they messed up by bringing the keys through the door in the first place, they keep going despite the fact that either one of them could suddenly die. Shimura and Tenma watch on, as Aoyama and Akashi talk back and forth and seem to have ab it of fun before they both see a vision together. A vision of Akashi taking over in soccer and taking the shot instead of Aoyama, becoming the hero instead. They both start crying, as it's announced that Aoyama is the "winner" which really means the one who will be killed. Aoyama lets out a small speech to his best friend while in tears, before being crushed to his death.
